TERRAZZO TILES ARE THE TRIUMPH OF THIS MID-CENTURY INSPIRED BATHROOM, BUT LOOK CLOSER TO DISCOVER AN ABUNDANCE OF DESIGN TREASURES

Now an indulgent pink paradise, this stylish ensuite was once “a classic 1990s renovation in a mid-century modern home”, recalls its creator, interior designer Olivia Cirocco of GIA Renovations. Homeowners Madeleine and Stuart were living in Singapore with their children, Lottie, eight, and Harry, five, when they decided to renovate their Melbourne home, which was empty at the time. “The bathroom was in its original condition and needed a revamp, and we had both loved terrazzo for a long time,” explains Madeleine. “It makes you feel like you’re in Italy in the 1960s!”

Embracing the star attraction, Olivia selected “the other colours, shapes and styles based from the terrazzo element”. She also closed in a doorway for privacy, honouring the owner’s request for “a nice ‘adult’ area, just for us”. In keeping with the home’s mid-century modern design, which embraces functionality through clean lines and organic forms, the bathroom includes plenty of pieces that point to the style, including the gentle curve of the wall light and graphic use of black and white. So, what did the family think of the new-look space when they returned from overseas? “Just wow!” remembers Madeleine. “We were blown away – it certainly met our expectations.”

IN THE DETAILS: The standout matt black showerhead from Reece introduces a modern element to this Melbourne ensuite, while jet tapware pops against glossy white tiles above the vanity. The highlights continue in the shower recess, where a black trim lines the transition from the terrazzo to the grey subway tiles.

GLOW GETTER: The elegant brass ‘Evora’ light fitting from About Space is a radiant feature offering soft lighting for ambience, while the floating vanity unit from Reece makes a striking first impression and conjures the illusion of space. “The shaving cabinets are practical for storing everything standing up,” notes homeowner Madeleine.

BLUSHING BEAUTY: The sensational splash of pink is courtesy of vibrant tiles from Signorino. “They outline the floor space and make the bathroom feel bigger than it is,” says interior designer Olivia. “Pink terrazzo adds that mid- century modern style, as does bringing them partially up the wall.” Vertical grey subway tiles are an inspired match, while the narrow window welcomes in natural light through a calming, leafy outlook of mature trees.

TRIPLE TREAT: The third rung on a trio of black rails is left free for the floor mat. “I find this a neat, practical and compact solution,” says Olivia. Adairs towels complement the pink palette and add cosy texture.
